I've moved the external links to a separate page with a collection of useful links. The focus of the main page (and most other pages) should be local content. I know it's not there yet but we'll get there!
--Leon 09:39, 29 October 2005 (EDT)
Just a suggestion for this Main Page. It might be a little more straightforward to have the links in the Contents section link directly to the sections they refer to rather than down the page. It saves having to click twice to actually get to the section your interested in, which I found mildly annoying. I won't change it though, I'll leave it to someone else in case there's a reason it's set up the way it is that I don't know about.
--Spazz Stick 22:51, 01 November 2005 (PDT)
I think you're right, forcing the user to go to link further down the page adds no value. I'll take a look and see if I can figure out a better way to do the main page. If you know how to make the user interface better then feel free to make the changes, this site is for the community.

Is it possible to make external links open in a new window by default?
Hum...I took a few minutes to look into it and I couldn't figure it out. It sounds like something that we should be able to do. If I do find out I'll post my findings here. --Leon 16:46, 13 November 2005 (EST)
I like the new domain! Great idea!
BTW, I think we should keep the RCGroups eflightwiki thread alive, either by announcing new pages or using it for more policy discussion. That way it'll raise awareness of this site without annoying people by advertising it. Similarly we should provide plenty of links back to RCG for anywhere where people might want to ask questions and discuss things (and then hopefully they'll post a summary here and both sites will benefit)--RobinBennett 17:39, 18 November 2005 (EST)
I agree we need to raise more awareness without being anonoying. I was thinking about closing the existing RCGroups eflight thread as the title is not too informative and will start a new thread with the word Wiki in the title. The first message will an introduction into the concept of a wiki and then there will be an announcement of the new URL. I'll also point people to the old thread. I'll also state our intention for announcing major changes/addtions to the wiki through that thread. Let me know what you think. Perhaps I'll draft the message here in the Wiki to give contributors a chance to add their 2 cents......let me know.

How do I create a new page? Until now I've always created a link and then followed it, like this: F14 by Charlye but plans (and other stuff that will appear in a catergory) doesn't need a link, so the only way I can think of is to create the link, create the page and then delete the link... --RobinBennett 15:31, 26 November 2005 (EST)
In your browser under the ADDRESS field, edit any URL on the wiki and replace the part after "title=" with the title of your new page. It would look something like this:
http://www.eflightwiki.com/eflightwiki/index.php?title=Name of new page
--Leon 17:01, 26 November 2005 (EST)
Thanks, it's obvious now you mention it!

an R/C Wiki is a Great Idea!
I wanted to add an image to the C.G. section on Flying Wing Design. Why can't I simply paste in a .jpg ?
Hope there are more contributions soon.
Check out the User Guide link from the Main Page. There should be info in there on how to post pictures. I'll be off line for most of today but I may be back online tonight and can provide more specific details then.
PS, thanks for the contributions....

Good news and bad news
First the bad news. Even though my ISP was helpful and did everything they could to try to help, they could not restore the data. It is gone. The good news is that the Way Back Machine crawled the site in and managed to cache many if not all the pages! Here is the URL to all the pages on the wayback machine: http://web.archive.org/web/20061117055749/http://www.eflightwiki.com/eflightwiki/index.php?title=Special:Allpages I will try to rebuild the missing pages over time. --Leon 01:03, 17 November 2006 (EST)
Thanks, I had meant to ask whether the site was backed up, but never got around to it... Anyway, it looks as if most of the site is back together now. --RobinBennett 15:14, 20 November 2006 (EST)
I've tried to edit a few pages today and got the error message "SearchMySQL4::update". MySQL returned error "1016: Can't open file: 'rc_searchindex.MYI' (errno: 145) (mysql.fatcow.com)".
If you've added a new page or have made significant changes to a page, feel free to add a NEWS item to the main page. This will help promote the changes and keep people coming back. I'll periodically go through the news and purge older items. Just a suggestion.
The Reviews and Mods categories are starting to blur, as it's natural to put both on the same page. However I can't think of a good name for a combined category. Any suggestions? --RobinBennett 14:46, 9 May 2007 (EDT)
I think blending the two categories is a good idea, it will be a one stop shop for any one model. Here are a few ideas for names:
- Model Profile
- Model Exposition
- Model Synopsis
- Model Basics
- Model Summary
- Model Outline
- Model Information
- Model Essentials
The word "Model" could be replaced with Kit/ARF/RTF or something else more imaginative. Let me know if there's anything I can help with. --Leon 09:57, 11 May 2007 (EDT)
Single column or double column
Not sure I liked the single column for the main page so I rolled it back. Were there specific reasons to change it to a single column?--Leon 11:06, 5 June 2007 (EDT)
Well, it only just fits on my screen, so it won't be long before we have to some sort of reorganisation but on balance I think the current layout is best at the moment. I think the first screen full of info should have links to all the major areas, and not need scrolling. I'd rather a hierarchy of pages than an index. --RobinBennett 16:10, 5 June 2007 (EDT)
I noticed someone (NOGIN) has made significant changes to the main page. I'd like to see what people think about these changes. Good? Bad? Indifferent? --Leon 11:33, 5 December 2007 (MST)
Sorry if I overdid it... The models were kind of buried underneath and hard to find, so I brought them out. Maybe I went a little too far... ?
There definately are plusses and minuses but overall I like it so I won't say you went too far. I want to make sure others have an opportunity to voice their thoughts and opinions since it is a fairly significant change....Leon.
Good to see more people taking an interest in contributing. Trent, the front page looks better now. Current news up to is good, We'll have to make sure we have things to say on a regular basis. My only concern is moving the external links up in the page. One of the things I want to avoid doing is having the EFlight Wiki considered a jump off page, I'd like to see the local content emphasized, so if it's OK with you I'd prefer to have the external links lower on the main page. Let me know what you think....Leon.
"Splash screens" looks good, but things are getting buried again. That's an issue that I think several of us had with the wiki. For someone like me who's browsing the wiki (and has a short attention span sometimes ;), it would be nice to see the aircraft I was looking for information on to be quickly accessible from the front page. It's clear, it's right there, no jumping around... From my own personal experience anyway, I didn't know until recently that this had other models besides the HBFP page that was linked from rcgroups.com. Just my 2c... :) Nogin 08:41, 7 December 2007 (MST)
Extreme Changes To Main Page (TrentD 23:02, 7 December 2007 (MST))
you may notice extreme changes to the main page. I hope you like it and feel that its easier to surf through the site. I added a few new sections on the main page, which including current news, featured article and featured picture (love the first picture of UltraFly Cessna 182 by PMDrive1061 looks like a real plane lol0. I'am hoping to change the article & picture every month or whenever to give it a new feel and not just a old site that doesn't get updated. Also all the links that use to be on the main page are relocated to all portals and have been broken down into seperate portals/headings.
If you have some ideas about stuff that can be changed or added to the main page i will like to hear from you (Even if you hate the main page tell me). I hope EFlightWiki will become a regular place for Aircrafts hobbyist and people with the passion. TrentD 22:52, 7 December 2007 (MST)
New "sleeper" accounts
Leon, I absolutely agree with that suggestion you made regarding new accounts which don't contribute immediately. According to Admin001, most of those accounts are created via overseas proxies anyway. You might take it a step further and post an automatic warning to a new user as he/she signs up with a check box stating that he/she agrees to the terms of the site. It might further state that spamming means an automatic ban and striking of the edit history from public view anyway. --VoltFlyer 09:00, 12 May 2013 (MDT)
