My first R/C car was a fussy old Monogram Lightning (or Yonezawa Wave Hunter to the rest of the world) electric buggy way back in the day...and I was hooked! Parts were unavailable, so I went from there to a Tokyo Marui Shogun 4x4 buggy. Still couldn't get parts. Undaunted, I finally wound up with a Tamiya Blackfoot which I still have.
Currently, both electric and glow planes are my thing along with electric helicopters and I joined the AMA and my local flying club as a result.
